However could it not be argued that lust (sexual desire) is a prerequisite for sexual arousal, which is a prerequisite for sexual intercourse, which in turn is a prerequisite for successful reproduction? It is one of those things that is innate in all healthy human beings, and most animals for that matter. However being that it is nearly ubiquitous, religion of course has found a great way to produce artificial guilt in it's followers by terming it "lust" and calling it a "sin". If people are convinced they should feel guilty about something that occurs in them naturally, then they will be more likely to repent thereby making them more likely to return to church.
A major contribution of religion to society is that it regularly creates feelings of guilt or shamefulness where none ought to exist. But in doing so, religion has found a renewable resource to serve as fuel for the "services" it provides.
