i have a dog and havent decided whether it's better just to take him to a dog grooming place or just cutting them at home. do you guys use a dremel or just cut them? any experience or advice?

I do my pits, myself. She would fight me when she was little but now at 1 1/2 she knows she better keep her butt still. I do it after she has been outside running so she is tired and dont care. You just have to be sure you dont get into the pink part or the quick. I usually clip the most part of the white and then file it down with a regular nail file til it's right at the quick but not in it. She has never bled or acted like it hurts.

The problem is when your dog has black claws. I would just clip a lil and file the rest that way you dont risk causing never damage.

Hope this helps! I just couldnt imagine paying to have Sadie's nails done once a week when I can do it. =)

I take him to Petsmart and let them have at it. He shattered the bones in one of his feet last year, and ever since, he will not let us get anywhere close to them. $8.00 for a nail clip is worth it to me.

You can use a reg clipper and file if you know how to do it right and not do it too short.

fyi most pet places that groom pets use dremels. i used to help this woman out that owned a pet shop in cumming. she has 5 or 6 championship dogs and has groomed an ass load of other dogs that have one shows and contest.

I take mine to the vet where I used to work and let them take care of it. My dog hates getting her nails clipped, and if I were to try it myself I'm pretty sure someone would lose a finger.

dremel... it's way easier.. and seems less stressful on the dog...

my dog HATES to have it's nails clipped.. it's the ONE thing that i just can't do...

so i use the dremel.. and it's much less of a hassle..
