As a Jew, and therefore as someone who has a great deal more experience with the 'Old Testament', I can tell you with some authority that the concept of hell as you describe it didn't even exist. Only truly dastardly people were 'punished forever in eternal torment', whilst everyone else went to Gehenna, a sort of Purgatory where you were judged and spiritually purified by being forced to watch your life as you lived it, and what could have been. Once that happened (some took longer than others, but 11 months is the maximum), the pure fragment of your spirit ascended to heaven.
