Now that I'm moving to Savannah, I'm hoping to take some classes at SCAD. I'm not sure if they have non-degree programs or lifetime education programs or not.

Anybody have any experience with online design education? Does AIA have these?
This isn't the worst summer I've had around Savannah.
Parris Island '01 - now that was one hell of a summer.

I got half a free ride at ACA and a huge scholarship at Ringling for their computer animation program. It ALL comes down to talent. If you have a hundred resumes to sort through, I can see your point. You are right. But I will tell you one thing, I will never be turned down for a job just because of my diploma. That's something colleges tell you to get you to go there. I had to make a very difficult decision when deciding to go to either SCADATL or Ringling and when I chose SCAD, I knew that the deciding factor wouldn't be my diploma. It would be my portfolio and my demo reel. The animation industry isn't easy to break into, and for good reason. There are a lot of extremely talented people in it already, the market is flooded with degrees from places like SCAD and AIA.

Believe me, i think that ACA was the superior talent base, but it wasn't because of their accreditation, it's because of their admissions requirements. See how far all the talk about accreditation will get you when you are trying to make it as an artist. You will end up being bitter and angry, and without a pot to piss in. Your talents won't amount to **** if you are on such a high horse about the school you graduated from that people can't stand to be in your presence for more than five minutes. It's all about being humble.

I'm talking about accreditation in general. I have to admit, I am new to the whole art deal, and I wouldn't consider myself and artist (so you may be right about the McDonald's reference, but what do I know). I would consider myself a business woman trying to gain some more skills to market my business better and for less money. I am taking up PR, not graphic design....so I personally won't be bitter about anything but I do get your point. If you were looking for an argument out of me, you aren't going to get one. I agree with the fact that if you have a shi.tty eye and ****ty art then it doesn't really matter. They'll find that out after the first or second or whatever weeding process once they finally get to look at your portfolio. Like I already mentioned, to me it's more about a weeding process from the jump. You need to have as many boxes checked off as you can. If you turn out to be a shi.tty whatever you apply for regardless of your degree and where it comes from you may not have a pot to piss in. That's called life. There is A LOT more than accreditation that comes into account when it comes to getting a good job. That's obvious. We just happen to be talking about accreditations so far and it is a factor, not saying it's the only one and some other things may outweigh that factor Internships/experience, grades, personality, recommendations, attire, portfolio......are all factors, it goes on and on and most of it having nothing to do with accreditation. Either way, I'm on the same page with ya bud

Well said. All of AIA's stuff is start of the art, and since they're now accredited it's probably a great place to start. Truth be told (bad teachers aside) my experience probably would have been different if I knew for sure what I wanted to do, and could have commuted to school without having to rely on a transit system established in 71.

Using Marta to get around Atlanta, while carrying 15K worth of camera **** loaned to you by the school, was a bit of a scary experience.

Unfortunately I found the teachers to be average, and couldn't really do photography assignments with a suspended drivers license. My major just happened to be one that you really needed to have your own car to get the results needed.

It's great if you know what you're there for, and you know what you want, but an art school isn't a good place to start college if you not totally sure what you want to do. A lot of the classes are so specific that a lot of them won't transfer to other schools.

No arguing though, the school did make me a better photographer. I just realized too little too late, that I wasn't really sure I wanted to be one.

A few of my friends go to SCAD, and from what I hear it is an amazing school. Plus at the Atlanta campus, the top level of the parking deck, overlooking the city is a great place to take a little "smoke" break at night, and just watch the wheels turn.

nobody "helps" me register. at this point all my classes have to be approved by my department chair... when you get to be a senior and you start taking upper level classes, there will only be 1 or 2 teachers (usually only 1) teaching the class. For me, senior project 1, special topics in animation, and 2d production team. Plus i'm taking digital video editing.

    Just wait.... you'll get there.

No one helps me register either at this point either. I just take all 4 of my classes in 2 days when I make my schedule. I get it now about the teachers. So, you have 4 classes and you could only take 1 class a day?
