Default Microsoft Zune v. Apple iPod?

I'm looking for a much larger MP3 player so I can carry around a lot of music at once. I like the idea of being able to watch videos, but I don't like having to convert them first. Also, are there ways to keep from having to use iTunes if I get an iPod? Suggestions/opinions?

Depends what you really want from a device. Like custom wallpapers or a larger screen? Get the Zune. On the other hand, if you want a huge library of (crappy) games, PC+Mac compatibility and that undeniable Apple "coolness" factor, get the iPod.

I sold my iPod and am rocking two music devices these days - a Mini permanently connected to my car's stereo and a P990 with a loaded Memory stick. Convergence FTMFW!

One word - ephPod. I've been using it for many years.

The Zune is cheaper in the long run. With 14.99 a month and all the music you can get is a deal. I don't know the actual mechanics of them though. Kinda want one in stead of the ipod I have now.

I've always been happy with my iPod... granted I'm selling my touch right now... but I still have my nano and have never had any problems with it. I like the fact that the iPod feels not as cheap as my friends' Zune... I dunno... The Zune feels like it's made of plastic.

The Zune is awesome. The iPod fad is old, and everyone has one. They have Apple software that is like Soviet Russian stuff that you have to use and it installs on your computer, and there are often many problems I've heard of with the iPod as apposed to none with the Zune.

The non scratch screen, interface, and feel of it is great. I'd reccomend the Zune over the iPod any day. I love mine.

    zune, lol?

It's a good replacement to the iPod and I'm sure it's a great mp3 player. The ease if the ipod is that it's easy to use for people that are new into that type of technology.

You download iTunes, you pay $1 for a song and then it automatically puts it onto your ipod while it charges. -- How is that complicated?

If you're talking about DRM that's not apples choice but the music industries. Which I believe all apple download songs come either DRM free or with 5 licenses to put onto any MP3 Player.

Get an ipod. If you don't want to be an ipod follower then get an ipod and replace the head phones with $15 different ones then no one will now you're an ipod yuppie.

Even if you ARE an ipod follower, dump the crap earphones. They're the worst factory 'phones I've ever heard. Heck, even the el cheapo earphones supplied with walkman phones sound better.
Koss KSC75 (clip-ons), Shure E2c/E2g (earphones) or Senn PX100 (headphones) are great (and cheap) starting points to hearing better sound quality.

I have an iPod but to be honest, the zune has a much nicer looking interface and the only reason people like the ipod more is because they've been using it longer (that or they just want to be one of the cool kids). The iPod is just an ugly piece of technology. Uh oh, I can here the apple fanboys now.

When it comes to the blow for blow capacity game, the iPod has the bigger storage amounts since it goes to 160gb, and afaik the zune is still limited to 80gb. But that's only a concern if you actually have that much music, which I would think most people don't. Personally, I'm very partial to mac products (I think everyone knows this), and the way I think about it, the iPod gained so much popularity so quickly because way back in the days of the gen1, other mp3 players were 512kb... occasionally you could find a 1gigger for a lot of money.. then BAM. The 30gig iPod came out, and it was small, with an interesting design, and it was pretty cost effective. Despite what mac haters may want to say, Apple has been setting the trend when it comes to gadgets. When Apple made the 30 gig iPod, everyone realized they would have to step up memory capabilities in order to make money. So everyone stepped up memory capabilities, then Apple released the iPod Video. Now just having an mp3 player wasn't good enough.. if you wanted to stay competitive, it had to have a video feature, too. Apple "sat out" the first round of cell phone integration, when people started putting mp3 players on phones. I remember my first mp3 player phone.. Samsung T809. Such a pain. If you had a call coming in you had to pause the mp3 player manually to answer the phone. It was a good phone, but it was so annoying to be trying to pick up the phone and forget to pause the mp3 player, cause the music would just keep on playing. Apple sat out the first round of all of that and watched to see what people were wanting in a phone. I'm a firm believer in upgrading phones when I go to get a new one, and when I went to the AT&T store in June of 2007, I had a Cingular 3125 SmartPhone that was taking a crap on me day after day. The only real upgrade was the iPhone. Sure there were the blackberrys and a few other PDA phones, but they were big, bulky, and required a stylus. I see stylus, I think "one more thing to lose". So I got the iPhone. I love it. With the iPhone, Apple once again set the bar, and the phones that have come out since to compete with it have had touchscreens that don't need a stylus, internet capability, etc etc.

Long story short, Apple's been in the game longer, and is a proven product... so my natural answer is to go with the iPod.

Fuck stance. Stance is for kids in skinny jeans with Justin Beiber haircuts. You don't need stance when you got swagger.

get the ipod. ive used zune, but i just think ipod is better in my opion.

converting videos is easy. all you ned is the videora video converter downloaded on to your computer and it will do the work for you.

idk how not to use itunes. but itunes is pretty cool if you want to import a cd onto your computer and then put the music from that cd on to you ipod.

you people are dumb. Nuff said, Zune >iPod. End of story,
Sure the ifad has been "proven" Microsoft has designed their zune to work with xp flawlessly, also the xbox 360, and now cars brand ****ing new. Lol. The zune might not be as "sleek"(if you wanna call it that) but it sure as hell is cooler then ipod. You can pick a ballin ass background, and listen to the ****ing radio with out buying an adapter for 30bucks. Oh and you can also send music to other zunes that are close(also known as zune sex). so you gotta click with the buttons OMG your fingers are gonna be sooo tired! I hate when ppl who never used zunes say they played with one once and it sucks. Id rather not pay $1 for every single song to put on my MP3 player. Oh and zune screens dont boil in the sun. Just so ull know.

I love it so much better, I cannot believe anyone would want the iPod commies taking over their computer.

Apple products are good for toilet paper, and that is about it. I don't get why people think the Zune isn't all it's cracked up to be, just because EVERYONE has an iPod.

Apple products aren't worth the cost of building them, especiallya the iPod.

You do not have to buy songs from iTunes in order to put them on you ipod, I have only paid for two songs out of all the music I have on mine. The only reason I bought those two is because I really wanted them and couldnt find them on bit torrent. In all honesty you dont even have to use itunes to manage your music, there are alternatives such as Amarok.

Thanks for all the input here! I am going to buy a zune w/ the docking station. My company has a surf control on my normal internet radio stations, forcing me to work in silence.

iPod is not worth it for me...

    ZUNE FTW!!!

I didn't realize more people finally posted in the thread. I'm lmao @ some of the comments from people who act like I don't know my way around technology. I had a 32mb Sandisk MP3 player long before the iPod came out and mp3 players were common. I also have around 260gb of music, so price is more of an issue than memory capacity. I'm not about to pay to buy songs off of itunes or pay monthly for the Zune service. Lol @ people wasting their money.

As per all the video stuff, I know perfectly well how to convert videos. It takes time and processing power I don't want to waste. I like being able to copy and paste AVI, WMV, etc files directly onto the thing without any stupid conversion programs.

Oh and I feel sorry for people using Limewire... it is one of the WORST file sharing programs I've ever experienced.

Screw the ipod, I'm buying a Zune.

after reading through all of this and having previously owned an ipod and having "test driven" my brothers touch i was hesitant about the zune. i just left best buy with my new 4gb zune. i bought it mainly for the gym and while at work. already have music on it. super easy to use and the radio really won me over.

We have both at our house.

I have a 80gb ipod and wife has a zune. Only issue we have found with both is operating systems. We had to update our computer since I was running windows 2000 for my main computer.

Issue I see with ipod, you have to run the software to get the songs on to the ipod for the conversion. The zune basically is drag and drop boom done.

Since we run both off of one computer my wife ocassionally gets some of my stuff on her zune. She said it tends to throw her work out off listening to my music.

i like the zune since you dont have to load the software you can just run it.

I won the ipod and had to pay for the zune.

having all the issues with not having the correct operating system pretty much made me like the zune a whole lot more due to drag and drop.

well put! Zune = Drag and Drop or just set up a folder and it will retrieve all its contents.

Just picked up my Red 80GB Zune since my 30Gb iPod Video decided to literally explode. I was weary at first due to the different interface, but I'm getting used to it after seeing my co-workers with theirs. Larger screen for movies, more customizability, and NO MORE ITUNES. Woohoo!
