    Default Which rifle?

I'm looking for a rifle to defend my home from any intruders be they robbers, assasins, aliens, etc... lol

I've never owned a gun in my life less shot a real one but have had the experience of cleaning and handling a couple of pistols.

I'm not too keen on the laws in GC but I'm over 18 under 21 so I'm pretty sure a pistol is out of question. Just looking for something easy to maintain and effective when needed.

Those 9mm carbines with the tubular magazines are pretty nice. Short and easy to maneuver through a house.

I'm like 6'2"-6'3" and a full size shotgun is still a little long for my tastes inside a house.

Just get a simple .22. I bought a mossberg 702 for 90 bucks, that i target practice with and I got it accurate to 90 yards with iron sights, with a 1-1 1/2 inch group around the bullseye. Its also extremely light, I got it at wally world.

An excellent choice for defending one's backyard from rodents.

.22 long rifle is completely inadequate for defending your home. You might as well get an expensive air gun.

I wouldn't want to be shot with one but you don't need too much common sense to realize someone shot with the round, even at close range, is more than likely not going to be immobilized or seriously injured. They will still be able to cause you bodily harm.

Wow you must not be too bright. Come to my property piss me off, and give me 50 yards or less and im pretty sire I can probably imobilize you, 90 yards or more and i can probably inflict a decent wound. No its not gonna rip your arm off, but anything is deadly if you hit someone in the right spot.

Just get a cheap pump 12 gauge shotgun and cut it down to 26.5" (26" or less is illegal for a shotgun). The barrel must be no shorter than 18" though (including the chamber)... A remington 870 for example is about 48" long. Cut 10" off the barrel and put a pistol grip on the stock and you will be right around 30" or so.

The point of having a shorter weapon is so that you can maneuver through tight places easier (e.g. hallways or small rooms of a house).

^ instead of going through the trouble. just get a hand gun, get you a nice .40 cal
glock 26 .40cal sits perfectly in the hand, and it's real small. 9bullets in clip.

A hand gun's perfectly appropriate for self defense.

Damn youre dumb. A glock 26 is a sub compact 9mm. And do not sit perfectly in your hands unless you got pu.ssy hands. Almost half my hand hangs off when i hold that gun.

Kill a lot of people recently? You're not going to have any problem defending yourself with a medium impulse, high caliber hand gun in .40 auto or .45 ACP.

Long guns, be they rifles or shotguns, are more powerful, more intimidating, and easier to aim. If you think that any of those reasons don't matter, then that's fine for you, but don't go around telling other people not to pick a long gun. The fact is that the only real reason for pistols is because you can't concealed-carry a long gun, and in a home defense situation that's not a concern.

Actually, all I've been saying is that both have their merits and are perfectly adequate for self defense. Also, a rifle isn't ideal for home defense since it will over penetrate and potentially injure someone else. Reading comprehension more please.

    Mossberg? Who said Mossberg?

I keed. 590 is where it's at, son. I keep one loaded with 8 slugs here in the house. I't also got one of those bright ass surefire LED lights on it to blind the mofo before I take a chunk out of him. I definitely agree with some sort of scattergun [ha, I love that term] for home defense.

The average self defense shooting takes place at 21 feet or less. It doesn't matter.

The impact of a shotgun loaded with 00 buck is greater than that of a pistol of any caliber, but a pistol's greater maneuverability mitigates this advantage when a high caliber pistol like a .45 is plentifully capable of dropping someone. Basically, they both have their merits so neither is plainly superior.

Which would be easier to use in that type of a situation?
Any caliber you have to be accurate under extreme stress.
    Shotgun is much more simple.

Shooting is very simple, at those ranges you don't need any level of experience with a firearm to be effective. You just need to point the gun and fire.

And honestly, that those ranges, a shotgun doesn't have a huge spread either. If you can't hit them with a pistol at >21 you can't do it with a shotgun.

Cut the barrel down and the spread pattern becomes much larger at closer range.

More recoil, illegal modification, etc. Although yes, it does do that.
