I want my first Dog...
I am 19, and can say I have never owned a dog.
I have always wanted a dog and I think its bout time I got one.
I'm not to found of those "girly, carry them in your purse" type dogs, so pretty much anything besides that will do.
If anyone is selling one or knows where I can get one for a decent price, post up. Also, any tips or little things I need to know to be a good dog owner, let me know as well.

Mmm I'd say, try the pound first. Usually adoption fee is only $25. If your a full time student its probably not a great idea.
Well, i live at home now so time wont be a problem.
The problem with the pound is I dont want a dog with some psychological problems and have him be all weird and crazy and stuff.
I want a puppy so it can know me at a young age.

go to the cherokee county animal shelter and look there. i know that you don't want a dog that has issues from being misstreated or anything but right now they have so many dogs that a lot of them have to be put to sleep. and you can walk/play with the dog so you will find out if the dog is really messed up or not.

Will do. I know I wanted my first dog to be perfect, but I can't be a picky little biatch and let some perfectly good dogs be killed.
If you have the number to the pound, I could arrange to go see them on Saturday.

I have adopted 3 from there. They are a great facility and have beautiful animals there all the time. They helped me with a bad situation a couple of years ago, so they are aces in my book.
You don't need to worry about "psychological" issues with pound animals. You will notice SOMETIMES some little quirk or trait, but I've not ever had any of them be problematic at all. For example, our dog named Cody is a Schnauzer that we rescued. He eats like there's no tomm. Sometimes he even chokes himself from eating soooo fast. He literally inhales his food. He's not starving, but that's just the way he is. No biggie. Gina, another of our rescue dogs, is as fat as a horse. She tends to eat her food fast and then try to eat everybody else's too. We figured out their quirks, so now we feed all of them separately and have no problems. We have 4 dogs total. At dinner time, they know exactly where each of their bowls are in different places both inside and outside of the house. They just eat their own and go back to where they belong. No problems. All 4 get along just fine. Cody is the smallest, yet he THINKS he's the biggest. He'll growl at the others every once in a while, but he won't DO nothing to them. We also noticed that Cody gets extremely nervous around small children. Maybe that's how he ended up in the pound. Either way, we just put him in his crate when small children are around. He's perfectly fine with that. Gina is a teddy bear with everyone. As long as your rub her belly, she's as happy as ever.
Bottomline is that pound dogs make incredibly great pets IMO. They have never given me any trouble at all. I even got my sister a German Sheppard when she first moved out of my parents home, which she just had to put down this past year......almost 15 yrs later. He too was a great dog.
I would highly recommend trying to rescue a dog first. Remember that certain breeds have certain tendencies, so don't get a Great Dane if you have a 1 BR loft apt. It won't work. Don't get an outside dog if you don't have a fenced backyard. You get the point.
Good luck and do check into the Gwinnett Shelter first. It's right there off 29 near 316.
Bad advice.
The best advice in this thread comes from several people. Go to the pound and rescue a dog. I've done it twice and have had great success with both.
Below are pics I took of a dog that I helped save from death. I was walking along the roadway by my house and looked over the bridge and saw the dog sitting there. She couldn't get out and we have idea how long she was there. I called the pound and at first, they wouldn't come out. I kept calling and finally they came out. It took about two hours for them to finally get the dog raised out of the river. It had rained the night before and it eventually rained that same night of the rescue. The next day, all those rocks and junk were underwater, not to mention this was in the winter and it was coooold. No one ever claimed her for the time period for adoption and I went back and got her. i say rescue a puppy from the pound. kinda sucks going though makes you feel bad for all the dogs. g/l and dont get a pit or somthing for your first dog.

go to the pound. my and my gf went there and i wanted to adopt every puppy there.
usually they're rescued and the only problems they have is from being neglected or mistreated. after a couple of weeks they should warm up to you.

It's a puppy and NO dog will show it's true tempermant until ATLEAST two years old. Don't you breed dogs? I figured you would know that.

that is not entirely true. we do puppy temperment tests at 6-7 weeks old. it takes all day but there is some system my mom and her friend use thats recognized by the AKC. alota of the temperment has to do with parents(breeding/linage) and how the puppy is raised from birth on. i have met sweet pits and mean goldens. it depends how they are raised. we have not bred one of our b!tches b/c she is dog agressive towards another b!tch in our household but she is sweet as anything to humans and a champion hunting and agility dog(very great working dog). so putting a time frame on temperment is not really releavent.
and i wasnt trying to demean you but i doubt alota ppl buy 1500-2000 dollar goldens on this board, our kennel breds for confirmation and performance homes.

Guys, he really doesn't need some expensive pure bred dog. What he needs is a dog that NEEDS love and attention to where when HE gives it to them they will bond forever. Breed has nothing to do with that. Yes, some breeds make more sense than others, but he certainly would not be well suited to go out and spend $1000 on a dog when it's his FIRST dog. If he had a favorite breed, he wouldn't be asking advice about what dog to get.
I'm telling you, pound dogs are awesome dogs. You are saving their life, it's very inexpensive, and you are saving their life. Did I mention you'd be saving their life????Seriously, I'm not certain they can, but sometimes I think that the dogs honestly are grateful and know you did save their life. Atleast they act like it at my house. I could go home right now and they would all greet me like I've been gone for a month. That's all that matters to me. They are all protective, they are great with my kids, and they are happy. What more could I ask for?

Yes, you can temperment test a dog when it is a puppy. Honestly though...what's the point? They have had no life experiences to affect their temperment at that point. Life experiences WILL shape a dogs behavior and it's reactions to different situations. Therefore, it is much more accurate to test a dogs temperment when it is older.
