^^^Yes, we know you carry and pull out prematurely a .380....
Caliber is not as important as confidence with whatever you decide to carry. If you are depending on it to save your life one day, you should be able to shoot it accurately without a second thought. This is where "fit" sometimes comes in. This is what my buddy Jerel was trying to explain in his post. Sometimes some guns are purpose built type guns, i.e. hammerless snubbies, pocket pistols, etc. They are there for only one real reason, concealed carry. There are going to be pros and cons to ANY weapon. NO weapon is perfect for every situation, hence why some people have multiple weapons.
The bottomline is that I'm willing to put money on SOME people being able to drop anybody with a puny .22 because they can put it where it can do some damage. You can carry a .50 DE all day long, but if you can't hit the broad side of a barn because it kicks too much for you, then your .50 DE is about as worthless as tits on a hog. So, you need to choose a weapon that YOU can fire well EVERYTIME.
My suggestion? Any compact Glock, XD, Colt, S&W or the like. Your budget is really going to dictate that choice more than anything else. One way to find out is to go to a firing range where you can rent a variety of weapons. When you find one that feels comfortable and you can shoot well, there you have your new gun.
