Yes they can. Many in the field are near retirement age. I dated a girl that was an RT and she would just sit there playing on Myspace making like $25 an hour waiting on a patient to need a scan. She would also get pay for being on call and if she had to actually go in it would be like double or triple time pay.

You can pretty much work anywhere in the 50 states and if you go work for a VA Hospital somewhere you can retire in 20 years with a nice pension.
