    buy an acoustic first... learn how to play.. then get an electric...

    acoustics are harder to play, so the transition will be easier for you to move to an electric.

    Play bass.

    Also, FYI:
    www.rondomusic.net sells great beginner stuff. Grab an instrument, a used amp, and pay for a professional setup/etc.

    That place is one of the best-kept secrets out there.
