    Not a pawn shop....

I bought an engagement ring for 12k, and got offered 800 bucks at a pawn shop. "scrap value" is what they offer....

    Let's see what you got?

Most will just appraise I beleive.

It's funny you can buy a ring for $5K dollars. You can go back 2 months later, and they will not give $1000 for it (even though it "appraises" for $6K)

That tells you what a fucking mark up there is on jewelry, especially diamonds.

They will appraise, may charge you a few bucks... There are a couple of certifications that they need to have for the appraisel to carry weight. I know one is GIA, but I forget the others... Go somewhere like D Gellar, they should be able to help you...
    or
Take pics, and stick on IA for 100 bucks?

Your best bet is to go right back to the same jeweler you bought it from. Most of the reputable jewelers guarantee a "trade-in" value for certain rings. At worst, they may give you store credit for the entire amount you paid for the ring. At best, they may be able to do something for you.

Stay away from pawn shops. Their business is to make money, and as much as possible, off YOU. They will never give you anything but a little tiny fraction of what the ring is really worth. You'd be better off putting it up on Ebay than doing that.
