it depends on if they need the whole actual HEAD GASKET replaced or just the head COVER gasket. your friend might have been talking about just the head cover gasket, which is a lot cheaper.
replacing the head gasket itself cost AT LEAST a grand, or less of course if you do it yourself, but it's a pretty complicated task.

which is true it is a cheap/ easy install but head gaskets are alittle more complicated but usually run about 500$ or so (this of course depending on vehicle type)

+1...i've been in parts for a while...was a manager at 4 different auto zones and never heard head cover gasket. Trust me though, i've heard some weird shit from people but never head cover gasket.
