You can also just buy a case and throw a hard drive in it, that is usually alot cheaper then buying one pre built.. as was mentioned above USB is the only "universal" connection to a computer now days.. fire wire is faster but isn't available on alot of computers. I am in a similar position now and plan to just buy a 500gigger and be done with it.
