    Here is what I know....
The issue is engineers basically want to beat the living crap out the Z and the competition for the money, from power to handling. Toyota has watched as the Z has done a great job proving a sporty halo back to the brand.
So this is why its taking so damn long
    1. There are Supra test mules based on the IS RWD platform, which actually is from the Lexus GS platform. It handles well but it is heavy, being shared with luxury sedans.Engineers are not totally happy with the results. Thing is, money is saved.
    2. There are Supra test mules based on a NEW Supra only platform. It handles GREAT and is light. Thing is it will cost a fortune to sell if Toyota wants to make money on it. Now Toyota is big enough to sell at a loss but that is not profit thinking.
    3. Looks. Tons of internal debate on what the next Supra should look like. Too many different renderings to show.
    4. The engine(s). Well unlike the Z, it does seem 2 engines will be available. THe first being the 3.5 in the IS WITH the dual VVTi and direct injection. Toyota 3.5s do without the direct injection in the Rav-4/Camry/Avalon, thus less power.
    I have heard around 320-330hp.
The optional engine would be the Lexus 5.0 V-8 coming from the LS 600L h. This engine is also going in the IS-F (super IS). 415hp, 8 speed auto
    5. Toyota has a 8-speed which would cut costs but enthusiasts would puke. So they need a high HP handling manual or DSG gearbox....

    And I'm donE!!!
    lol

that's amouth full lol...they just need to stick with the 2JZ engine latform IMO..instead of making a great Import car into a wanna be Domestic V-8 car...but that's jsut what i think lol

    2JZ is very dead.
    1. Not emissions friendly
    2. Heavy (Lexus V-8 only 2lbs heavier)
    3. I-6 is less compact, so it makes design tougher (need a long hood)

I mean, the engine is a Legend, no doubt. It's time has passed though.....

So they can't revamp it? They're probably going to sell it at a loss anyway, but they can take it. I mean damn, if tuners can make 600HP supras street-legal, you mean to tell me that Toyota can't make the 2JZ lighter and emission friendly? That just doesn't sound right. And they know nobody will like a boostless supra.

We are in the technology age. The 2JZ unboosted makes 225hp. The new Toyota 3.5 with direct injection and dual VVTi makes 306hp and is ULEV II certified. Most new engines have some sort of aluminum. The 2JZ is an iron block beast!

The 350Z is not boosted from the factory, its engine is shared in every Nissan, from the Quest to Murano to Altima to FX 35 etc. The aftermarket boosted it.

    The 350Z 3.5 makes 300hp. The twin turbo 3.0 V-6 300ZX made 300hp....

Exactly. None of the Japanese tuning "legends" have come back here with a turbo.

RX7, Twin Turbo -> RX8, Non Turbo (granted, that engine is a pile of shit)

    300Z, Twin Turbo -> 350Z, Non Turbo

Don't get me wrong, I love the 2JZ as much as anybody, but there is no way Toyota is going to bring back the Supra with a heavy ass iron block in the nose. Especially with all of the technology these days.

Which brings me to another point to ponder: Has anyone else noticed that manufacturers that were known for big turbo cars (Mazda, Nissan) have gone to N/A, and two of the masters of N/A (Honda, BMW) are now producing turbo cars? The times they are a changin, my friends.

But who's to say that's bad? The evo has a cast-iron block, and it's packed with technology

Let's not forget that the 2JZ was in the IS300, albeit in unboosted form. And the SR20DE was in the 200SX along with the Silvia.

Like I said before, the evo has an iron block and it does well for itself. And you can't call the RX8 the RX7's successor, unless you mean only in name, they're realy two different beings.

Toyota will have to step their game up to compete with the Z in 08.. 3.7L engine with more horsepower than before. I am looking forward to the competition though.. between 08-2010 should be very interesting for those that are performance minded. GT-R, and the Supra on the market here in the U.S.

I read in Car and Driver a few months ago that the new Supra was going to have an n/a high revving 500hp V10, to compete with the new gtr, Z06, and Viper. And a cheaper version with a v8 to compete with the 350, Mustang, New Camaro ect...But that was a while ago.

That V-10 is the current LEXUS LF-A, which is coming in 2009. It is F-1 influenced and was developed when F-1 was using V-10s...they now use V-8s (rule change) so it may become a V-8 with around 500hp

no offense julio.. i mean it is cool that they're bringin back the supra.. but man.. who cares with the GT-R being released in 09?..

maybe toyota keeps claiming they are aiming the Supra @ the 350z.. but in all honesty.. if toyota had brains.. they'd aim at the GT-R after all. we are having horsepower wars again

I am not for the 8 cylinder proposed optional engine. They should do the six and a tt six. 8 cylinder tt would be sick if someone did it though. So there is potential, maybe...

Wow, a G35 Coupe look-alike with S2000 taillights and Porsche CGT headlights.
Can't Toyota come out with anything original?

Even Mazda has more original designs.
