Assault of CSU student under investigation
Local law enforcement agencies are investigating a report from early Saturday morning that a Columbus State University student was sexually assaulted in her on-campus apartment by someone she met over the Internet.
The victim, a 19-year-old resident of the Courtyard II Complex, 3528 Gentian Blvd., said she had talked to the suspect several times and invited him to her apartment during a recent telephone call, according to a CSU press release. When he arrived around 5 a.m. Saturday, he forced her into her bedroom and assaulted her, she said.
She said that after the assailant left the apartment, she called the Muscogee County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's department and CSU police officers responded and took the woman to the hospital.
The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 28-30 years old and about 400 pounds. He was last seen driving a gray Toyota.
The victim said she originally met the man online through Myspace.com, prompting CSU officials to warn students again about the dangers of providing personal information over the Internet.
"Chat rooms are a popular form of communication for students," said CSU Police Chief Rus Drew. "Unfortunately, predators know this. Therefore, chatting poses a particular threat."
