Quick question for everyone.

I wrote a paper for American literature, and I skipped a word because the name slipped my mind. Now I finished the paper, but still cant think of the word or phrase to use. So here is the question.

What word can I use that describes how the poet explains things.

Here is an example:

The night was dark, dark like the greatest deapths of the ocean .. etc

The bold part is the word Im trying to think of. I though of it as “examples” but that’s not it. Is it “figure of speech” or is there a single word to describe the bold part?

I always have good luck with the MSWord synomyns thing...and coming up with things that sound deep using it...I will type what I want to say and then look at the synomyns thing and see if any of those sound better than what I have...

Saying "examples" sounds to generic. Its more like magnifying something with a phrase.

The other thing is that that apple line that you posted has positive sounding words in it and the bolded part kind of puts it in the same positive sense IMO...

I getcha now, but I dont need a word to replace depths of the ocean. The depths of the ocean was just an example of what he is doing. I need a word that means using a phraes to enphisize somthing, RG was doing it with the 300zx add with the corvette tail light conversion (If you saw that post).

I myself would use "black like the deepest abyss of the ocean", but it is a simile.

Similies and metaphors. They are used to emphasize and compare instead of describing with simple adjectives.

depends. they are two different things. similes use like or as to compare and contrast and i forgot how metaphors are different

They are different.

The one you posted is a simile. Is uses the word "like" to make a comparison "He is like a dog"

Metaphors compare somethings by using the phrase "to be" or a form of the verb "is". "He is a dog"

Don't forget personification.. that could also be part of what you are looking for.
