What Makes an Enthusiast???

Ok here let me explain myself a little more..Ok, mentioned I was a female b/c I knew it would be obvious from the name...I honestly do want to know what everybody's standpoint is on this subject...

Like am I an enthusiast if I know about and can name every particular piece of a single vehicle??

Do I need to know how to swap an engine before I have it done for me? Or would I need to do it myself to prove I can??

If I can't do shit to my car but change the oil and repair a tire, but I love my baby...Does that make me any less of an enthusiast?

Do I have to participate in the car "scene" in order to be an enthusiast?

Do I need to street race/drift/track race/touge/in order to enjoy and appreciate it???

Is my love for cars enough to consider myself an enthusiast?

Yes I am starting out...Obviously I dont know shit about car..But I want to learn so does that mean that I dont love my baby as much as somebody that knows everything about their car?

I look at my 240 everyday before I go to work and when I come back..and all I want to do is be behind the wheel and finally feel her...I love the way the wheel feels under my palms...Love the way the seat hugs my ass when I sit down..I enjoy the shifting of the gears as I drive....I love the feeling of being in control of this wonderful machine and want to learn all there is about it....Shit I would have to say the feeling competes w/sex...So am I not an enthusiast until I can officially hold my own in a conversation about my baby?

These are the questions I want answered...I do appreciate the people that have answered honestly thank you...For the rest...We come onto IA to start shit, see shit start, and egg shit on...Its fun..It is...But sometimes people simply ask questions they want answered...That is the only reason that I asked...

For the first time, I completely agree! Why do you find it necessary to be labeled an "enthusiast"? Everybody has different opinions on what makes an enthusiast so you may be considered 1 to 1 person, but not to another...so what? If you enjoy your 240, then learn what you can & enjoy it while you can & don't worry about a stupid label.

Not worried about a label...Never used it for myself....Just wondered what it was..Obviously wanted several opinions...If I didn't I wouldnt have posted it...

I never classified myself as an enthusiast, I rather not classify myself as something that I have to ask about...Sorry...I am not trying to be ultra cool like all the "enthusiast" on here. actually.. in case you haven't read 99% of my posts... most of them are highly irrelevant with anything... and that was some of my late night whoring when im in my half awake half asleep trance. Dont feel honored I took out time, simply because it's either that or me being in the next lame thread.

Historical usage

Originally an enthusiast is a person possessed by a God. Applied by the Greeks to manifestations of divine possession, by Apollo, as in the case of the Pythia, or by Dionysus, as in the case of the Bacchantes and Maenads, the term enthusiasm was also used in a transferred or figurative sense. Thus Socrates speaks of the inspiration of poets as a form of enthusiasm.

Its uses, in a religious sense, are confined to an exaggerated or wrongful belief in religious inspiration, or to intense religious fervour or emotion. Thus a Syrian sect of the 4th century was known as the Enthusiasts. They believed that by perpetual prayer, ascetic practices and contemplation, man could become inspired by the Holy Spirit, in spite of the ruling evil spirit, which the fall had given to him. From their belief in the efficacy of prayer, they were also known as Euchites. Several protestant sects of the 16th and 17th centuries were called enthusiastic. During the 18th century, popular Methodists such as John Wesley or George Whitefield were accused of blind enthusiasm (i.e. fanaticism).

Modern Usage

In modern ordinary usage, enthusiasm has lost its peculiar religious significance, and means a whole-hearted devotion to an ideal, cause, study or pursuit. Sometimes, in a depreciatory sense, it implies a devotion which is partisan and is blind to difficulties and objections.

Science-fiction writer Thomas M. Disch once suggested that the mystical experiences of writer Philip K. Dick might be described as a form of enthousiasmos.

One might be said in modern terms to be enthusiastic if they are excited about what they might be engaged in.
