    Default No Shift Transmission

Have any of you seen this? I havent heardanything about it till the other day. A good friend of mine bought a Doge Caliber, and the transmission is done with pully's. No gears, no shifting. Its called the continuosly variable transaxle. I went fora ride in my friends, and it was SOOO smooth, no shifting or anything. Very interesting concept.

the vehicle itself is hideous...lacks power and appeal. The only thing of value is that transmission.

i have heard about this tranny. its like theres a band inside of it that starts off in like a oval shape that goes left and right and as the car speeds up it changes to where its up and down. i don't know, its what i've heard about it. so you can floor the thing and the motor will wind out and stay there but you just keep going faster and faster. crazy.

drove a caliber during the ajc show's opening weekend when dodge let u drive it on a little "road course". felt very smooth indeed but it had no pickup and go whatsoever.

Yup... old Honda technology.. basically just 2 "pulleys" that can change into any size, therefore making infinite gear ratios on the fly... it's pretty cool except for the fact that they are yet to make one that can hold a good amount of torque.

the automatic mini's, the ford 500, and few others have this shittay idea IMO. It always feels like the trans is bad in the mini's. First time i drove one i was worried it was broken...no i'm almost as used to the CVT as the SMG...

Yeah, and Nissan techs have to buy roughly 12 "special" tools just to work on one. I read about it in Nissan's Tech mag. Interesting, to say the least, but only time will tell how reliable they are.

It's called a CVT (constant velocity trans). It uses a planatery gearset and brake band to change the gear ratio. Many cars on the market have them now.. saturn has some, nissan, toyota, hondas, etc..

brake bands and planetary gears are what make up convention trannys, cvts use pulleys and a steel braided belt

You are correct, i was thinking of another variable output tranny design ive seen using a single planetary gearset and a band that varied tension.

it would be cool if it was able to stay at the powerband the whole time and just change the gear ratio when u floored it but ive only seen these on nonperformance cars. im guessing it still has a reverse and a neutral gear though? and a torque converter?

The problem is that they havent developed one that can handle alot of power, the band being the weak point
