Actually, no, the 280ZX Turbo was no match for the 1.1L RX7 back then. Neither was the 300ZX.

I'm not surprised, everyone agrees Datsun/Nissan made a mistakes with the amount of weight they put on the s130 chassis and keeping an engine that was first produced in 1968. The RX7 was a response to the Z, not the other way around.

That was the downfall - weight. If they had kept making the old 260, it would have been more competitive. The 280 was the downfall, and the 280ZX was the nail in the coffin.

To me the 280z was the best chassis (with a few changes like a 240z doors and such) the weight in that car was all for additional chassis rigidity and EFI, the 280zx took it too far with superfluous things done here and there that for no reason needed to be strengthened.

The weight was from the addition of luxury items, which a sports car does not need. The 2+2 took it to a new level - the addition of a back seat in a sports car - not needed, and adding additional weight. The 2+2 was arguably the worst sports car that Nissan ever made - weak, heavy, and wasted space.

I think they considered the b210 a sports car... And the 300zx was even slower than the 280zx for several years...

But thats beyond the point haha.

The 300ZX redeemed itself with its looks, the 2+2 was just not proportional when they extended it past the B-pillar. I'm not the only one that thinks so.

The B210 is awesome with a big motor - but I never considered it a sports car.

What you should do is take the driveline from your 280 and put it in your wagon.....
