Some Atlanta city workers, including supervisors, were arrested Thursday morning on charges of insurance fraud, 11Alive News has learned.

Police started to round up some of the 10 suspects, all of whom work for the city's water works department, as they returned to headquarters after working in the field.

The employees are charged with filing false supplemental disability claims with the insurance company AFLAC. According to the state insurance commissioner, AFLAC paid $50,000 in claims to seven of the workers before becoming suspicious.

The men and women claimed to have similar injuries that kept them off the job, even though they were continuing to work and draw a salary.

"We consider this very, very serious and especially when you have public servants that are suppose to be helping the people and be fiduciaries of the public trust are out here committing felonies and defrauding for insurance fraud," said insurance commissioner John Oxendine.

Oxendine said officials with AFLAC notified the state when they realized several employees from the same department were making similar claims. Specifically, the workers said they had been hit in the head or eye with a baseball bat.

"Insurance fraud's a serious crime. You and I are going to be paying for this money. It's not going to cost AFLAC a penny because they pass it on in insurance rates. You and I pay for insurance fraud," Oxendine said.

A city spokeswoman said two of the 10 suspects being arrested are supervisors.
