That isn't always as easy as it sounds. It could have locked him out of even neutral. Also, saying all vehicles should be manual is prejudice.

FWIW, I can drive a manual car, in drive, in an out of cars, while texting and drinking a soda. I know it's not safe, but It can be done by some.

Cables stick too, but I think this Toyota situation is WELL beyond the floor mat sticking. I think it's a software problem as well.
