Prolly had your oil too hot.
Just get a deep pot and put enough oil in there for deep frying. Heat it up to about 325-350. If you don't have a thermometer, its right when a drop of water will make it sizzle. Until you get used to it, just get a thermometer. (About medium heat on a good stove)
I dipped the pickles in egg, and then into the batter, and then into the fryer.
I'm still playing with several different batters. I used a chicken fry batter last night.

if you like snack food another great one my brother taught me was chicken chunks w/ jalapeno wrapped in bacon brushed in bbq sauce... then bake them. he calls them earnies nuggets b/c there was a little hole in the wall in tx that used to carry them.

I had been using Zatarain's fish fry, but I switched it up last night to a chicken fry batter with a nice, chubby black woman on the cover. I got it at the Kroger near my house. It was a lot better combination with the vegetables. I'll post the name of it tonight when i get home.
