Mononucleosis (mono) is a mildly infectious disease caused by the Epstein- Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Marked by severe fatigue, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, loss of appetite, muscle aches and pain, and a general ill feeling, mono can also lead to an enlarged spleen and jaundice. Also called "kissing" disease (because it can be spread in this way), mono can occur at any time during life. This illness lasts about two weeks, but it may be several more weeks before fatigue diminishes and your normal energy levels return.
