Yeah, hopefully most people know the actual laws on shooting someone, and wouldn't just shoot someone who is breaking into their car. For most people, who would shoot anyways, I think they feel that they are doing society a favor. But really it's a lost cause. You will never get rid of all of the thieves. Once someone is convicted of a felony, serve their time, and are released, they aren't going to be able to find a job, so they will resort to other means. Ultimately the justice system inevitably produces more crime in this light.
