Default So the winter is coming..what to do to a yard?

Its getting cold..I was wondering what you can do to protect your yard from the winter cold, or what prep work you can do to your yard that will help it grow well in the summer time...any suggestions..

Or you can add elaborate whatever you want..

i have Scotts lawn service maintain my yard and they do some special chemical stuff in the winter to make sure it comes back nice and green. there are also some fertalizers and stuff like that you can buy at home depot and other places that are just for the winter to put on your grass
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it!

Just spread some weed & feed. It'll kill the weeds, and fertilize the grass to keep it strong during the winter.

Follow the scotts fertilizer regiman on the back of their bag..It works perfectly, no need to hire chemlawn, or scotts, when it takes 30 minutes to do it yourself, and its cheaper. I have heard if you scalp your yard in the fall it will invite weeds to start growing in early spring. I have done it all, burned the yard, scalped it...I haven't seen much difference, just fertilize the yard every 2 months, and apply lime in the fall..

So about when is the right time to add lime to your yard? Also what kind of fertilizer should I be throwing on the lawn..should it be now or later on when it gets colder?

Finishing Touches Before Your Lawn’s Winter Nap

Late fall is your last chance to take care of some details that will prepare your lawn for a healthy winter and give it a strong leg up next spring. If you’ve been putting off putting your lawn to bed for the winter months, we strongly suggest doing it now.

Tips For Tucking In Your Lawn

Lower the height of your mower. Your lawn should enter winter without any young, tender growth that could make it more appealing to winter diseases, like snow mold. New soft growth on the lawn is also more prone to dry out after the first winter winds come through, which leaves you with a tan or brown lawn all winter. So, as late fall approaches, begin to gradually bring the cutting height down on your mower, until you are almost, but not quite scalping the lawn.

Its important to do this in several steps to avoid suddenly removing all the green leaf tissue and damaging the turf.

Don’t Miss A Late Fall Fertilization

This is a time of year when your lawn can really chow down and make quick and good use of fertilizer. The lawns top growth has slowed, so these nutrients go straight to the roots for a strong start next spring. Your turf actually converts the fertilizer into food reserves and loads up its root system so its ready, willing and able to get a quick (and healthy) start in spring.

Remove Leaves And Other Debris From Lawn

Before snow or other winter weather hits and buries the evidence, take the time to go over the lawn one more time. Leaving debris on the lawn can smother the grass and create problems with winter or early spring diseases.

If the lawn has not been aerated, there may still be time. Aeration is very effective as long as the soil is not frozen. In other words, as long as we can still pull a good core, your lawn will directly benefit. Late fall aeration gives the plugs we pull plenty of time to melt down and to get thatch decomposing. Be sure your mower and other lawn equipment has been winterized to save grief in the spring.

Late fall and winter are great times to discuss your lawn care program for spring. Making a few decisions early might even save you money! After all, if winter is here, spring can't be far behind!

LOL least one person was close.

My addivce to keep your winter nice is to mow your grass one more time then when the grass really is noticeablly dieing then you lower your mover and Scalp the yard. And i mean scalp lower the blades a good bit usually 1-2 if you use a push mover and about 1 inch off the groun dif you use a riding mower. Then you buzz it down and then as soon as you do that run right over the yard again. This way to pick up any dead grass that didnt get caught. Then your yard will look great until spring. Its also good to mow your yard at least 1 more time halfway through the winter jsut to pick up leaves and any little bit of grass that tried to grow in the first few weeks of winter. By spring your yard will come in nice an dlush and look great.

    Just my 2 cents!!!!!

Yo Atif you know you're my boy and i care about you and your family. Now with that said, I will advise you not to burn your grass because within 10 mins. 2, possibly 3 black suburbans will be at your house.
