I can't stand carpet: it's unsanitary, constantly has to be cleaned (especially if pets are involved), and has a shorter life expectancy.

Hardwood floors are easy to maintain and just let one of those robot vacuums roam to keep it clean. A quick lightly damp mop is so much easier than steam cleaning on your hands and knees. Of course for acoustical reasons places like theater rooms should be carpeted but isn't required as long as there is a rug between the viewer and speakers. Then some people don't like that hardwood feels colder on their feet and with small kids harder surfaces can be dangerous.

It all comes down to priorities and if cleanliness isn't one of them then sure leave the shoes on. If you have house keeping then it doesn't matter
