I suppose the jury saw that they were obviously trying to kill him while he was retreating and off the property. You cant deliberatly hurt someone so much like they did when he had left their property, it's in the law's hands then. Now on them being on the property yes you can defend yourself as much as possible to what ever degree is saving you and your family from being hurt.
