(I should have clarified in the first post) I was giving a little too much force of the caliper bracket bolt and the car gave way and fell off the stands. The car WAS in gear, but I should have used other safety precautions as well.

Ah that would explain it. Still though like others said major lesson learned, could have been alot alot worse!
