Any intelligent person will rationalize that you didn't know, not to mention this person never had a relationship with their mother. Its not like they died last week.
Just let them know that you didn't realize and you never recalled a conversation that entailed her passing away. That you are sorry and then just make the effort not to bring it up. I don't ever talk shit (even joking) about mother's just because of my experience.
