Since the 1800s any achievement by a Negro we not recognized at all. In the early 1900's Carter Woodson began a movement to preserve black history, because our history was not documented, other that slave documents. He started several publications and associations to inform people of what blacks had done for America. He took the time to assemble historians, educate them, and help them continue the historical process. At the time, VERY few achievements were acknowledged by white americans/historians. The month of February was coined "Black History Month" to honor the birthdates of Frederick Douglas and Abe Lincoln; but also because several achievements of blacks occured in the month of February.

In short, white America never acknowledged the achievements of (then) Negroes/blacks/African-Americans at all. Still to this day, American History books do not have them included, nor are they discussed in detail. The use of the month reminds and enlightens those that do not know and hopefully sparks them to learn more about it. It was/is a way to highlight, to non-blacks, the immeasurable contributions that blacks have made to this country.

Once again, as with black colleges, organizations, and funds, we had to make our own because we were shut out of the mainstream.

i met you at one of the sonic meets airmax, doubt you remember, but youre a pretty cool ass dude. dont think im being discriminant or anything, but how the fuck is designating a school as all black NOT being racist? if i wanna go to a certain school and i cant get in because im white, wtf? i mean maybe i could fill out all the paper work and check the box labeled "african american/black" and it would look ok, but as soon as i get there they would be like who are you?

just seems like a double standard. like the way some black people are like "thats OUR word" when in fact it is just a degenerate term that perpetuates the existence of the word, and the ignorant feelings associated with it. i never say or hear it until i hear a black person say it, then that word lingers in my mind like a sore thumb like the person who said it, annoys the fuck out of me.

ya dig? like slavery and racism was bad back then, and now that its gone and done away with(mostly) we have merely seemed to turn the tables with all black colleges, 'race quotas', scholarships for minorities, workplace minority quotas, etc.

and it is a great that the consideration for black history is there, and hopefully it will inspire those potentially interested to do some research, but i could care less for the most part about what month it is and who did what, regardless of color. i do not see the point in bringing it back up. history is happening now.

It's still not acknowledged. Sure, Obama will be in a book in a few years, but the people that literally paved the way do not get counted.

Dude people don't even know who Charles Drew is, nor would many be living if not for his contribution. Simple stuff, not asking for alot

It's not that we WANT to coin a holiday, but at the time Negro Week was created it was all WE could do to keep the accomplishments preserved.

Nah, I remember you. I ran into you while you were working at QT the morning of the Santa Run, but it was so early my brain didn't process you, lol.

HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) DO NOT DISCRIMINATE! Seriously, you can go there, apply and get accepted EASILY. The reason for their foundation in the late 1800s was because whites did NOT allow BLACKS into their higher education institutes. I knew the kicker at Southern University in Baton Rouge a while back, he was WHITE. Go to Tuskeege, you will see white students. It may seem from the outside looking in that whites are not allowed, but thats is hardly the case. Whites choose not to go b/c of pride, or lack of knowledge that they can attend.

As for the N word, I don't use it, nor do I like hearing it.

As for the Affirmitive Action and race/minority/female quotas, talk to our government. They were put in place for a reason though. Some white people finally realized that it was wrong to discriminate based of race and gender and needed a way to check the assholes (at the time) who refused to comply.

I will say this and hope everyone understands, 99% of anything created by black people has NEVER been closed off to ANY other race.
