Married, filing jointly FTW!

Yeah yeah, I know that I let the government make *free* interest off of me, but it sure is nice to get the big check at the end of the tax year.

i heard random every day people who bought houses from july of 2008 on get like 10k returns and stuff... Crazy? (some sort of wierd pay it back no interest loan type of thing)
but yeah I Think i've been doing my taxes wrong... I always get $ back in federal but owe state... like EVERY year... whats that about?

$7500 and the cutoff was something like April 15th of 2008 for buying a house or something like that.Originally Posted by RandomGuy

No, it's $7500 for first time buyers who purchased or will purchase a house between April 9, 2008 and July 1, 2009. The current stimulus bill is aiming to increase it to $8,000 for anyone who buys a house in 2009, the entire year, not just until July.
If you get back federal and own state, most likely your fed and state W-4's are different and one is withholding too much and the other too little.
Comparing refunds is nearly useless (in an analytical sense). I mean it's a conversational topic but you really can't look at anyone's refund and say "Why didn't I get that much back?" Too many factors. I barely get anything back but that's because I recalculate my taxes every year. Now what I actually pay.... that's a whole different ballgame. It's ridiculous. Makes me really hate our tax system.

FYI- The $7500 is to be repaid over the life of the loan. The new plan will be a true $8000 tax credit with no payback.

Zero from federal and a whole 26 buck from state.

^^ Be sure to add up and itemize medical expenses if you had a lot that insurance did not cover. That will help you tremendously.

Have to file married bro. If you were married even 1 day of the yr, you have to file married. Trust me I looked into the rules. Personally I think it's BS. So many other things require 6 months out of the yr. Like any dependents you claim have to live with you at least 6 months out of the yr. But if you got married on Dec 31, 2008 at 11:59pm, you have to file married for the year.Originally Posted by Marcus Burnett
