Default You wanna complain about work hours? (little rant)

You know...I kinda miss bitching about my 8hour work day more and more. I miss it.

This week is a 6day work week. Last week was a 6day work week. This week I'll have put in around 70hours of labor. And I don't mean pushing papers, or walking around selling cars or anything. No. That means crawling on top of big helicopters, running up and down the airfield on foot, pushing around 500lb ladders-on-wheels (easiest way to explain it), carrying around 50lb helicopter blades...labor. My normal hours are 4pm til 3am sunday night through friday morning.

I'm serious. When I get back to the civilian world, I'll get more laughs from people complaining at wherever I work than I get on a daily basis from crude marine corps humor.

Don't get me wrong...I love civilians, and can't wait to be one again. Just saying...you just don't know.

    See ya'll in 4 years!

Now, on a good note, that IS something I'm VERY thankful for...

I've got benefits, and guaranteed pay. Not to mention a guaranteed job for another 4years and 1month.

I'm VERY sorry to hear for the less fortunate with the economy having people laid off, lately...unfortunately, my sister was one of them...

Yes, I do. If you have experience washing birds, you MAY want to look into applying as a civilian contractor. During the day, we don't wash our own birds. Civilian contractors come on our base and run our wash-pit. We pull the birds up, they spray it down, scrub it, rinse it, and wait for us to come pick it back up.

What kind of birds were you looking to do? It's a rather exciting job...just tiring with military hours. For civilians, though, it shouldn't be nearly as bad. I think it's cuz they know that if we were on contracts (like a civilian) we'd have dipped after about the first 2-3weeks, LoL.

At this point in time, I'm not sure. My contract is a 5yr, so I've got another 4years to go before the decision is imminent. It'll depend on a couple things. My MOS at that time, my rank, the economy, and if I've got a family or whatever. But also, I don't know what they're going to do fo rsure, but I heard something along the lines of this particular MOS not having a re-sign bonus. If they do, you can bet I'll be looking in the civilian world for a job, more likely. I never got a signing bonus when I first enlisted. Most everyone else in my MOS got at least 5g's. I won't make the same mistake.

My choice to re-up will ALSO depend on my education. If I can finish out school while still enlisted on this contract, I'll be re-upping as an officer. If I don't complete my education, I'll probably re-up as a reservist, and go back to school. Then when school is done, I'll have the option to amend my contract, and I'll then be a reserve officer. Another amendment can then be made if I choose, and I'll be an active duty officer.

I haven't yet gone on tour, but I hope to see Afghanistan. Also, we actually still have a large presence in Japan, and frequent Korea and Australia (many don't know that. Sorry if I insult your knowledge on the topic). If I can get something like that, I'm definitely down. But again...THAT part depends mostly on if I have family whether I'll wanna go or not. So long as I'm single, send me anywhere. But I don't wanna raise a family the way I was raised where daddy came home after I was asleep, and was gone (most of the time) before I woke up. Nor do I wanna be like many military families where the military member misses either the birth, or a good portion of their children's lives. I wanna be there for my kids.

I do actually enjoy the job I have now. I just hate the solid hours, and irregularity of them. It makes it hard to plan. Buddy of mine in my shop had a girl from out of state fly in last weekend. We were told at the last minute we were working friday night, so he only got to spend about 36hours (including sleep-time) with her, and she spent most of the time in his room alone. Luckily...he didn't like her much, LoL, and was happy when she left. Nonetheless, I enjoy the job, but the hours suck. What do I wanna switch my MOS to? As an officer, I wanna fly. Enlisted, I may switch over to admin, computer science (networking, programming, etc), or one or two other things. We'll see when the time comes. For now, I'm stuck where I am no matter what for one more year before I can do anything.

You looking at enlisting or something?

    yup. There's always one douchebag...

I wasn't saying I work more hours than anyone else, just saying that 70 is a strain on the body. It was a simple rant. Did you overlook the topic where it says that's all it is? Where I said I don't really have much to complain about? I think it was my like first or second post in this thread.

I feel ya guy. I am in the Army at Hunter AAF and I have felt your pain many times. For the haters....if this guy is a LCPL he is not making big bucks...really. Sometimes your guys have to understand...there are not set hours for us military folks....you can get called in at anytime....and you don't have the option to say no. Now I am not complaining as I am a two time reeenlister and soon to be Warrant Officer, but if you have not been in the service you cannot possibly understand how thing can be.

Pft, QD stay out of this, you work as hard as two or three of us on IA combined anyways, don't even talk about your near-military experiences.

Hats off to ya. I'm E3. Promoted 01DEC2008. Thanks for your service, good sir. And...what you say is by far, true. Sucks, sometimes, but I mean honestly, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I've got something on my resumee in the future that most do not.

I just get somewhat offended when someone things I'm being pussy about the work I do. I work hard. I know I do. And I know not just anyone can do it. It's something to be proud of...what I am. So when someone steps on my turf, I stand a little bit taller... I may complain here and there...but I wouldn't trade what I've got.
