Actually, president lincoln did not directly free the slaves. If you read the emancipation proclaimation, only the slaves int the southern states were freed. At the time of the emancipation proclaimation, the southern states had formed the confederacy and had created their own government, which rejected the government of the north. Thus, President lincoln freed slaves he did not have the authority to free being as the slaves in the territory that he freed belonged to a "soverign" nation state. Some historians actually believe that president lincoln would not have bothered with freeing slaves at all if it didn't piss the confederacy off. Lincoln was very political and trying to free the slaves was not very popular at the time. The outcome of the civil war freed the slaves. As Paul Mooney says, "know your history".
