backpacking through europe

i got the idea from qwick.

im going backpacking next summer. im going with 3 good friends and we are starting in denmark. i have been to plenty of sites and stuff, so i already know what to bring and about how much i need to save.

what i wanted to know is, of peoples experiences from when they have gone. hostels vs hotels, is camping a good idea? what are some underrated cities that i must visit. i mean i know the usual, venice, amsterdam, paris, etc. we have chosen to not have a set schedule of where we are going or how long we will be there once we get wherever we are going but it would be a good idea to know of some places that i have to go at least once while im there.

examples of pubs, clubs, and hostels would be great. thanks

edit: does anyone know of where i can get discounts on a good backpack and some other traveling stuff?

also, does anyone know of anywhere to get the best plane tickets? i have done lots of research and have looked all over and feel that i am pretty prepared, but any help would be great.

well if you by chance end up in england, make it down to the southern coast. its not your typical beachy sandy coast, but the views are breathtaking... lots of greenery, castles, and pebbly beaches. good camping too, in places like newquay and further up in cornwall. fuck london.

Traveling around Europe is amazingly easy. Trains go everywhere.

There are tons of books about cheap travel in Europe and youth hostels. I've only stayed in normal hotels in Europe though so I can't offer much advice there.

My main advice is to get a small phrasebook for each country so you can approach people and speak in their native language. Most of them will speak English but people will be very nice to you if you make an effort to great them and then ask if they speak English in their language. Most of the misconceptions about rudeness in Europe come from people not trying to fit it and being rude Americans.

Oh, when taking the trains, there are certain trains that travel overnight and will actually stop so the people aboard can sleep. Like if the actual trip takes 4 hours, they will stop so it lasts 8 or 10 and you can sleep on there instead of getting a hotel.

I hear the hostels are really cheap though and great for meeting people. It's a whole different world over there. Just keep an eye on your belongings and have a good time.

thanks. i really wouldnt mind sleeping on a train to save some money. i heard of people getting personal locker type things to lock stuff up. dont really know where to get anything like that though
