I'm going to start a new thread over here so that we don't shitter up Admin's with this discussion.

The only argument I've ever seen from an animators POV is the way the mouth motions aren't lip-synched. To be honest, that's a pretty insignificant point IMO when the rest of the animation is of good quality, appealing to the eye, and compliments the story it's portraying.

Also, I have Grave of the Fireflies if you'd ever like to borrow it. It's pretty powerful, and there's not one happy moment in that entire f*cking movie.

P.S. - Goldenboy? Worst anime ever IMO. God that show is garbage.

Goldenboy has some entertainment value that you really need to be on certain level to understand. A dumbing down if you will.

My buddy made a bet saying that if no one could sit and watch Grave of the Fireflies and not tear up at least once.

Yeah I get the mouth movement thing you speak of. I don't see that as a problem. I just think the stories are all too similar. I also take into effect that every story is stolen from somewhere else and it can all be traced back to Greek Mythology.

The Japanese have just played out the Hero's Journey. Which yes American animation does the same for the most part. It's just Americans are better at the deliver of the stories IMO. I use to be a fan of anime so I'm not trying to be biased. I just got bored of it because to me it was very redundant. All and all I just think anime lacks good storytelling. The stories are solid, but the delivery isn't.

Probably, it was just never my cup of tea. If you like Goldenboy then check out Iketeru Futari. It's pretty much the same thing chopped into 15min episodes.

I'd win that bet then. Grave is sad for sure, and most people will cry. However, to me, it was just too much to really enact a serious emotional response. When I say that there's not one happy moment in that movie, I mean it. After a while, it just becomes so overbearing that you grow numb to their suffering.

Oh, I feel you here. I hate the typical series that revolve around a hero character and his triumphs over obstacles. It's outdone in every part of the world and I'm tired of it. It's the primary reason why I can't follow these things that they put on mainstream television these days.

I would expect at least a little biasedness from you to counter my own. Around the late 80's through the early 90's, everything was the same. Studios are finally starting to get their creativity back in Japan and it's been great. Check out some of these examples.

You don't get these kinds of stories and dramatic execution in Western animation these days. It's these rare gems in the mountains of fluff that keep me going back to anime. If Western animation had something to offer in the same aspect, I'd look at it but it's just not there.

Take GI joe.... Cobra does something GI joe interjects they shoot at each other..... NO ONE FUCKING DIES!!!! and GI joe saves the day. A story follow by a moral and blah blah blah.

I totally admire the Final Fantasy movies for their visual aspect, but WTF happened to the great storytelling that happened in the games? That is the whole reason why I like FF in the first place. It was one of those games that I immersed myself in. I agree that the Japanese take more time to put into their art. Mainly because they have a lot of disposable income and animation is far too popular to get a budget cut. That is the main reason animation has because to die out here. They kept cutting back and cutting back until there isn't much left. One person can make more money posting flash cartoons on a website than a whole team of animators can.

It seems a few companies are still holding on to the traditional themes of animation. There are some really good movies coming out now days in 3D. The problem is we reward the 3D and make cut backs on the 2D animation.

The FF movies are a joke when compared to the games. Advent Children was decent, but only because it had the backing of FFVII behind it. As a stand alone movie, it's really not that great storywise. I'd love to see something along the lines of FFVIII put into a movie.

Anime is Japan's third largest export and shows no signs of stopping. It has a huge global market and Japan is dumping more and more money into it. It'd be nice to see American studios doing the same, but all we get is Disney closing their animation studios.

True, and I've nothing against 3D animation. I love the Dreamworks and Pixar releases. Still, they're no replacement for good 2D animation.
