While those are serious cuts, and she probably lost a fair amount of blood, they don't look to be life threatening. Well, personally I'm into this sort of thing aestically and sexually/sadomasochistically/intimately, so I can testify that this - and the esoteric culture appreciating such extremes of it - aren't all about being sad, feeling "something," "making the pain go away" or more such emo poetics.

Judging from the pics I'd say there's emoness involved - the "I've given up," 'I wanna die asap' texts are a giveaway - but there's also definitely aesthetic motivations. The stitches, ribcage shot, quality of the pictures, patterns and placement of wounds/needles, effort put into hairstyle and such all suggest the pursuit of an ideal of self-destructive beauty.


So is she (is it a she? lacking evidence, wouldn't bet on it) messed up? Probably.

But this particular expression of it isn't entirely negative, might even lead to a sense of accomplishment and personal value. Or some nasty infections and death from bloodloss; I know that most people's fears over self-inflicted wounds are horribly exaggerated, but I've no experience with wounds quite that deep and numerous.

My dad was bipolar, and deliberately killed himself on a motorcycle. He made it very clear to us in the months prior to his death, that he was not a happy person, and that he believed he was doing more harm to his family, and especially his kids than good. As a result of the incident, I was in therapy for two years, and have had my fair share of thinking the world was gonna end.

But there is a huge difference between being down, because you have damned good reason to be; and being down because you want to be, and enjoy the unwaivering attention of people who are just trying to give a shit.

I have no sympathy for middle aged morons who think cutting themselves, and posting it in the internets is makes them look dark, interesting and like a tortured kindred spirit. Especially in the cases of people who are just fucking melodramatic, and would be so dumbfounded by any actual trauma that they wouldn't be able to function or do more than sleep, let alone cut themselves, take pictures, write messages in blood, look scene, and post the epic fail collage for the world at large to see.

i appreciate that man. im not a attention whore like that by no means i had a friend that did that shit til i convinced him to go to rehab now he's kool. this shit recently was cause of my grandparents that raised me dying all of the sudden then right before that my fiance left me and cheated on my right before it... o well i guess such is life.

"Crying for attention" is an oversimplification of the extremity only people completely distanced from a culture make to elevate themselves above it.

It's a strawman that doesn't really sum up even the shallowest emo kid.

Also, artistic accomplishment isn't rational, it's aesthetic. Anything and everything is a potentially valid expression, if only someone is set up to appreciate it. The emo writing isn't my taste more than it's yours (although I liked 'zombie'), but for them it might simply complete the picture, like the lyrics to a song can add to it regardless of their truth or applicability.
