Default Military Reserves: Air Force and Navy

Are there any members of the reserves here? For a long time I wanted to go to the Air Force, but as my life continued to shape itself I never went.

Fast forward to now, I really want to join the reserves. How is the basic training done for individuals with a full time job? I know for the AFR it is 6 weeks, but are you pulled from your job to train?

Basic training should be the same for reserves and active... When you are on leave from your job for military, you still have your job when you get back. You are guaranteed that you will not lose your job when on leave for military.

I spent 7 years in the army and after college probably going back in as and officer at least for a couple of years. If you have more than 90 college credits don't be stupid go into the officer corps.

Can't apply for UPT until I'm 1 year out from my degree, that will be Spring 2010. Till then I've decided to enlist in the reserves and get some experience under my belt, not to mention get to know the unit that I may be applying to.

Thanks! I am leaning on it pretty hard. It will have to be near the summer or fall of next year. I need to get in shape and do a few things in the coming Spring.

Yeah, i finished my BBA in 2006, so the Officer corps is what I am aiming for.

So you went in out of H.S., left for college, and going back? Congrats to you sir!

It all depends on what you want to do. Once you have your mind made up about that, then you can look at the various branches and see which one fits you. I enlist in the Georgia Army National Guard when I was in HS. Went to BCT at Ft. Benning. I spent 4 years as an enlisted.

At the same time, I earned my degree and got my commission. I have never regretted joining the Army. I feel this is what gives my life purpose.

If you do decide to join and do eventually want to become an officer, I say enlist first and learn the perspective of the enlisted side. In my opinion, I think it makes for a much better officer.

I have long chosen the Air Force. I spent long hours with my dad at dobbins, from flight sims to reading manuals, lol.

I am going to take Basic training beyond serious and go in as an officer.

I also want to keep my current position with my employer.

In reality, even if you dont LOSE your job, you might not want to be there anymore afterwards. Some places are real assholes to reservists.

Don't do Reserve or Guard, go Active if you do anything at all. If you get any kind of decent career and family after completing your initial training; prepare to put things on hold on a day's notice for a few weeks or a few week's notice for over a year. The way I look at it, the military should either be your life or not in your life at all. If you're Reserve or Guard and doing well in the civilian world, the military is nothing but an interruption, a set-back, and delay of civilian progress...but something you've got to do and deal with if that's what you sign up for. If that sounds good to you, go for it...but there are other options in the military.

If I could set the clock back 5 years I would've gone Active duty no doubt about it.

Definitely took some time getting used to developing the plan and watch it unfold instead of being hands on. I will be frank, I do like the fact I get paid a little bit more, but, that is not why I did it. I wanted to influence and provide a vision for my unit.

But, as an officer, I get to interact with more soldiers and because of that, I have learned from more than just those in my company.

Yeah I didn't like my first enlistment. To be honest most of my friends damn near sh*t themselves when they heard I was going back. There are a lot of things I really miss about the military.

It seems like you have the right idea. My buddy is a recruiter so I have intel on the open slots in the area. If you can try to get a direct commission. Meaning you get a job in your degree and you won't have to go to OCS. If you want to make a career out of it go to as many schools as you can. I went Airborne while I was stationed at Ft. Benning. When I get back in I'm going to see if I can get TDY to go to the Pathfinder and Air assault schools. When you get picked for the next rank the first thing they see is a picture of you. If you are standing there all tabbed out you are a going to get the rank. That is one thing among many that they look at, but I tell you it doesn't hurt.

    Anyway good luck.

Not always true. Unfortunately they can't let you go due to you being in the military, but often times employers will make up some other excuse as to why you lost your job.

the best officers are the ones that lead by example and know that NCO's run things. Take care of the soldiers and they will take care of you. Fcuk your soldiers over and very soon you will regret that lol. Officers with enlisted experience are generally some of the better ones out there.

I took the ASVAB last week and its not critically bad, I did okay enough to qualify for the position I want but if you have a good understanding of high school algebra and good reading comprehension skills you should do okay.

Yep ASVAB is not that hard really, pretty basic stuff. The academic portions of the test are what is used to calculate your AFQT score, basically your overall score. The other career oriented sections are used to calculate the line scores you are given to help determine job qualifications. 31 and up is passing in Army for HS Grad, but a 50 or above is preferred and required at the moment for GED applicants. I believe Air Force requires a 45 QT to enlist.

I ended up with an 83 and I'll be honest, the only parts I wasn't a bit confused on were the math and comprehension. I have limited Mechanical knowledge and the shapes gave me a big ass headache.
