well, being a dodge mechanic... i have a few things to say...

    STAY AWAY FROM THE 4BANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you can find a nice R/T they are great, the 5.9 really has a nice punch...
the 4.7's are nice and can get up and scoot...
the 3.9 6banger isnt that impressive either...

and to be honest with ya i havent seen alot with manuals so they r pretty rare...

go out and test drive a few of the v8's

You should look into some Dodge Forums. I'm assuming you only came across some Dodges wholesale.

Leisa and S. 4 Life NM?

I want to know what motor to stck with....

    the 6 or the 8

I heard the six takes almost as much gas as the 8 to run...

also the ones I'm looking at are the auto matic, Slt, ext cabs.....

    basically looking at any negatives....

thanx for the info so far....

and yeah came up on a few of them wholesale.... but I do not want to get into headaches...

I'd get the 4.7 v8 it's the "newer generation" motor, more effecient, more power and more reliable.

    Dodge went from:
    a 5.2 to 4.7 small V8 and gained power
the 5.9(240-250hp) was replaced with the 5.7 Hemi(340-350hp)

Also, if you want performance you can get the 4.7 with a manual tranny and I think the 5.9 only comes with an automatic. I've seen a 4.7 manual out run an RT Dakota and both were basically stock. Oh, and in the Dakotas, the 5.9 was only offered in the RT model I'm pretty sure.

Also, if you're considering the V6 they did a similar motor "redo" there, 3.9 to 3.7, but i'm not sure if the 3.7 was offered in the dakota, it was first offered in the Liberty. Maybe that helps some, just figured i'd throw in my $.02!

get the extended cab or 4 door, the 2 door reg cab is cramped....

as for motor..... like the other guy said.... 4.7 or the 5.9 the v6 is very underpowerd vs. the v8 and drinks just as much gas.... the 4.7 is a more common engine in there also... and i belive that the 98+s came with a 3.2, 5.2, and 5.9.. in 2000 they introduced the 4.7 into the dakota, the 5.2 is just a 5.9 with a differnt crank....

i have a 2000 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with the 4.7 v8....i love it personally plenty of power...had it loaded down with about 20 somthin tires and 16 of those were big truck tires and never once had a problem with too much weight to get up and go.....the gas mileage isn't the best but the v6 isn't any better....i have had the truck since april 21 of 2000 and i have given it absolute hell and given it is showin signs of wear after 130k miles but after what i put it through and being the first year/first month for that body style and motor it is expected...i would highly recomend a quad cab v8 dakota
