Spare me your fun little tidbits of useless information about your beloved anime... I could care less. The fact that millions of people like it doesn't mean it's well done animation in the classical sense. It's a preference. All a matter of taste. Unfortunately, too many people have a warped sense of "good taste" after jumping on the anime bandwagon years ago... then forgot what true, good 2D animation is. miyazaki is all i can tolerate. we've been through this Ran.

Go watch something like "rock & rule".. the ralph bakshi film. That is actual animation. Not this mass-produced cookie-cutter fluff you swear by.

If by "for what it is" you're referring to Cartoon Network in-studio series, then yes. But it's far from anything relative to "good".

Anime, like with anything, has good and bad. You "tolerate" Miyazaki because you probably saw the Disney stamp on it and thought it was one of their films. I'm willing to agree with you that anime bandwagon has exploded and resulted in a bunch of crap series becoming popular with the fanbase. Death Note, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist, Bo-bobo Bobo-bo, Crayon Shin-chan, and others are all mediocre or sub-par series at best. I'd love to see what you consider to be "good" 2-D animation these days. The Disney animation studio is dead, Pixar and Dreamworks are all 3-D, so what exactly do you have? Also, the fact that millions of people worldwide like anime says a lot. Maybe you should look into some quality series and find out that there is a reason why people like it so much.

f*ck disney.. who said anything about disney? but as far as rock & rule goes... it may not be current, but the craftsmanship of the animation blows away 90% of that stiff sh*t that comes out of Japan.

Again, this "90% of that stiff sh*t" that you see on TV is all the low-budget crap used to appeal to kids between the ages of like 8-15.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=PxKn5AwOTis

Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters Per Second is what I refer to when I talk about "good" anime. Not the crap that you're seeing on Cartoon Network in the after-school block.

Ok... i'm seeing some nice backgrounds and pretty effects animations... that's about it. Still haven't seen any well animated characters. Oh wait.... lol the bird flying was well done.

Let me guess... when the characters talk, are their only two mouth postions a straight horizontal line, and a triangle?

Mind you, this whole time when i say animation, i'm not talking about the whole film in itself.... I'm only referring to how the characters move, act, etc..

Wrong. Makoto Shinkai is referred to widely as the next Miyazaki. His story-telling abilities are enough to make you cry and the animation quality is top-notch in every sense.

Now I've the respect in the world for classic animation. Disney fairyland movies (Cinderella, Little Mermaid, ect...) and other features are smooth and well animated. I don't like the character designs, but their motions are very fluid and I love it. However, since the mid-80's American animation quickly turned to crap and there's nothing left worth watching. Even you'll admit to that.

Anime isn't all the stiff "2-Clip" motion that you'll see in some of the mainstream stuff on CN. On that same note, can you even find me one current American 2-D animated feature that's actually worth watching?

When I refer to "animation", I'm talking about everything as a whole. Perhaps that's where we're conflicting. Classic Disney animation and such had very smooth movements. Mainstream anime traditionally does not when it comes to lip-synching. I'll give you that. Their body movements however are usually very well done and colors are well animated, shadowed, and toned.

Sadly, no. Because it's all pretty much dead. there are some independent works here and there worth watching, but for the most part, it's all of the same CN caliber that you keep referring to unfortunately.

however, (and i know it's a chick flick), have you heard of "Enchanted"? it was a live action/2d animation film not too long ago. i haven't seen it myself, but you can find clips on youtube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=08NzDB_i3bw

yes, it's Disney, but it's interesting to finally see Disney make a comeback to their classical style... before the whole 3d craze. But if you read any animation magazines, i've seen that there are quite a few 2d feature films on the horizon...

Enchanted, isn't that supposed to be primarily live action? Like the priness gets brought into our world and the prince chases after her or something?

Anyway, from an animation standpoint I love Disney's studio. They've always had excellent backgrounds, characters, soundtracks, and story-telling abilities. However, I feel that the 2-D torch has been long since passed to Japanese studios. They're the only nation that really exploits 2-D animation in a professional sense anymore. Yes, I know that a lot of it is the cookie-cutter "fluff" as you call it but, from what I can gather, the real quality animated features worth watching are coming from Japan.

When I say quality, I refer to character animation, background animation, soundtrack, voice acting, and story-telling abilities as a whole.

I don't read magazines of any sort. I only read Game Informer beause I get 6 months free with my Edge Card. lol

When you say 2-D films on the horizon, do mean like good ones (animation wise) or something along the lines of The Emperor's New Groove?

Good ones. 2d features are making a comeback in America.

Nobody "passed the torch" to Japan... but ever since Toy Story, American 2d animation died because American audiences became fixated with 3d... and at that time, that's where the money was at... so sadly, other studios started flocking to 3d and firing all their 2d animators. Now that the whole 3d "fad" has died down (nobody really says "WOW" any more, because 3d films are more abundant) you're going see a surge in people making 2d feature films in the future. I graduate next spring and I plan on being part of it.

I dunno man, do you really think there is still a market for them? Not to sound elitist, but the Japanese pretty much have the 2-D market wrapped up for the most part. Hell, even Cartoon Network is becoming more and more anime based in terms of their shows. Of course that's because their conforming to the demands of the public, but still.

I also wasn't aware you were taking animation classes. That good sh*t man. What you are planning on doing?

I know it's hard to believe, but trust me... you will see more 2d features in the near future from American studios.

and yes... i'm getting my BFA in media arts & animation. Backgrounds are my forte, but i'll also be including some 2d animation work in my portfolio... hand drawn 2d is where my heart's at. But i've also done a lot in flash. I'm not sure though... I'll put my portfolio out there and go where it takes me.

That's f*cking awesome man. I had no idea! I want to direct personally, but I don't have the history or credentials to do anything of the sort. There's nothing quite like seeing something you've dreamed about come to life. Hell, just editing videos and having them come out the way I envision invokes an emotional response in me. Pretty sure it's just a dream though.

Sorry, I got side-tracked. Best of luck to you man! I'll look for you in the credits.

btw Ran, search for The Princess and the Frog... or it may be The Frog Princess in america. Should be coming out in 2009. disney's going back to their roots... and if it's as good as I think it'll be, and people like it, that means the suits will want a piece of it. and then, I can guarantee there will be many more films that follow.

edit: srry for the random bump lol.
