Fact: Before 1936 the national championship was determined by a different measurement than today. National championships before 1936 are widely disputed.
Fact: GA Tech claimed to be the national champion in 1917 (they went 9-0), and for 20 years or so after tha So did Univ. of pittsburgh (10-0, they were not beaten by GA tech in 1917) and Texas A&M (8-0).
Fact: GA Tech claimed to be the national champion in 1928, so did the Univ. of Detroit.
Fact: It was decided much later by the NCAA to accept the Helms Athletic Foundation's selections for years prior to 1936, as it was the easiest thing to do since helms had the longest running polls at the time.
Fact: From 1936 until 1998 the AP poll was widely regarded as the standard for selecting national champions.
Fact: GA tech claims to be the national champion in 1990. However, the AP poll named Colorado as the national champion (Colorado won the orange bowl, a bowl which has decided the national champion many times). GA Tech was named national champion by the UPI poll, a poll that was no longer accepted after 1990 because of this dispute. Tech won the "citrus" bowl, a bowl never used before or since to determine the national champion...
I'm not trying to argue with you that tech doesn't have 3 national championships, but on all three occasions there were at least one more team who also claimed to be the champion that year. At least when UGA won in 1980 they won outright, and nobody challenged their claim to the national championship...
