This is what is so difficult about a PVS (Persistant Vegitative State), the subject will react to certain stimuli, but there is no conciousness whatsoever. This isn't like a coma, where people have come out of it, there has been no one in recorded medical history who has recovered from being in a PVS. It is just really hard for the family to accept, because the person is responding to certain things, but there is just nothing there.
