Canon G9 or S5 IS (56k warning)
Hey guys. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with either of these cameras. I do not want to spend over 500 dollars on a digital camera.
Any helpful advice, recommendations and such will be helpful. I've done my research on them both, but now I actually want opinions from those that actually use it day to day, and ect.

I use an S5 IS every day. What all do you want to know about it? Never used a G9 though so I can't really compare.
Do you use manual or auto settings? What things/situations do you most want to photograph?

All around for everyday using. Was looking for something close to a SLR because I'm entirely too cheap to spend more then 450 or so on a digital camera. I lean more toward the S5 IS but since it would be my first DSLR I am not sure If I should get the older model which is the S3 IS or what. Right now I have a slim line camera (point and shoot) pocket camera. And It's not suitable anymore for me. I want more zoomage.And interested in taking photos of the outdoors.
I used to own an S3IS but switched to a Panasonic FZ18K since the S5 has a bit of fringe issues in its photographs. Canon might have solved it this year though.
Cursory differences between the two
In any case, you can't go wrong with either one. However, if you aren't entirely sure about what camera to buy, I'd suggest checking out the SX100IS (10X, 8MP) which is definitely a step above the usual P&S cams. The main benefit? You save about $100 compared to the S5 and FZ18.
I've looked at the SX100IS I didnt like the look of it. I am now to the point where I am not sure If I want to get the S3 IS, or S5 IS. My main thought is..if I've never had a camera like that before, is it best to go with the lower model first..which is hte S3 IS vs. the S5 IS, or just go for the better/newer model in general?
I shoot with an PowerShot S5 IS w/ a 4 gigabyte Extreme III SDHC. I had an S1 IS before this. GREAT camera. I would not recommend buying an S3, it isn't a lower model like you talk about it; it is just an earlier one.
That's cool. Now my main problem is I have no clue which model to get the S3 or S5. I have no experience with DSLR cameras. Only slim line/pocket cameras. So I really need someone to point me in the direction of the best move over time would be, so I don't regret getting the less/newer model...
Since you seem to have your heart set on getting one of the Canons, I'll stick with dishing out advice on the SxIS models. Here's a comparison between the older model (S3 IS) and newer one (S5):
DOWNGRADES:
Burst Mode:
High-Speed Continuous Shooting (2.5 FPS) no longer available.
Movie Frame Rate:
15 FPS no longer an option in either 640x480 or 320x240 resolution modes.
Audio Sampling Rate:
- Sound Memos = 11.025 KHz
- Movies = 44.100 KHz
- Sound Recorder = 11.025/22.050/44.100 KHz
(On the S3, you could select all 3 sampling rates for all 3 applications. The S5 gives you no choice in Sound Memos or Movies.)
Intervalometer (Time Lapse Recording):
No longer available.
Shortcut Button:
Less options to choose from. Can no longer assign IS, My Colors, Recording Pixels, Movie Recording Pixels / Frame Rate, or Create New Folder.
ISO:
High ISOs (whatever that means) are automatically processed using Noise Reduction (I don't believe NR was used with the S3).
Memory Card Slot is now found on the bottom of the camera in the battery compartment.
UPGRADES:
Burst Mode:
2 new modes added. Continuous Shooting AF and Continuous Shooting LV (both at 0.9 FPS).
Movies:
- New recording limit set to 4 GB per file (as opposed to 1 GB with the S3).
- New 640x480 30 FPS LP mode added (when length is more important than quality - doubles the recording time).
LCD:
- Size increased to 2.5" (as opposed to 2.0" with the S3).
- Resolution increased to 207K pixels (as opposed to 115K with the S3).
Display Information:
Added 3:2 Guide Lines to the available options.
Shortcut Button:
2 new options to choose from. Can now assign Custom White Balance and Digital Tele-Converter.
ISO:
- Added ISO 1600.
- Added Auto ISO Shift.
SCN:
Added Aquarium scene mode to the available options.
Others:
- 8 MP (as opposed to 6 MP with the S3) - Upgrade? Debatable!
- Uses DiG!C III (as opposed to DiG!C II with the S3).
- Added Safety FE and Safety MF.
- Added Face Detection technology.
- Added SDHC Support.
- Added My Category (used to organized images by categories).
- Added a Hot Shoe.

Thanks for posting that. Now we know not to waste any more of our time giving you advice. There is no reason to buy an S3. If your requirements are so particular that those changes ruin the S5, then you should be buying a Digital Rebel.Ahhhh
Oh no. I was meaning...never had a more advanced camera before, still don't know if starting higher vs lower is wise for someone thats coming from just a regular slim line camera.
Ah. Gotcha. Sorry if that came off as brash, what you said made no sense since it wasn't in context. Unless the price difference is massive, you may as well buy the S5. I'll upload some pictures later for you; where I am right now has slow internet. In about an hour I'll have access to hardwired T3, so it'll be much less time consuming.
you can get a canon rebel xt dslr for less than $450 now...the xti are going for a little over $550. both with lense kits

Where? Don't really want to go over 450. And with me never having a camera past a slim line digital...i think that's too advanced for me yet. I won't be using it every single day, don't wanna waste money.

I think I'll be happy with the S5. I'll upgrade in a year or two to a DSL, when I've gotten good with photo taking.

Ordered the S5 IS combo deal from newegg.com this morning.
im currently using a G9, and i cant say that its not a bad investment at all. I take it EVERYWHERE. great point and shoot with RAW imaging. Its probably the closest to a DSLR without being a DSLR.
Yeah, that's a very nice camera. I thought it looked too much like a point and shoot for my liking. Also, didn't want to spend 500 on it, lol.
