maybe, but part of the problem is that you apologized for something you didn't do, which in effect confirmed in his mind that you did in fact do it. albeit you were caught off guard but there's no way in hell i'd apologize for something i didn't do, i would've told him he got it all wrong and that it was a misunderstanding.
maybe that is funny, but no funnier than you or i having said the same thing i'm sure at some point in our lives.
