Parts per billion and parts per trillion? So let me see...

One molecule of water has a molar mass of roughly 18 grams. My one-liter bottle of water has a mass of 0.998 kilograms, or 998 grams. So that means that it contains 998/18 = 55.4444... moles of water. One mole is equal to 3.022 x 10^23, so that value by the number of moles yields

    55.4444... x (3.022 x 10^23) = 1.676 x 10^25 water molecules in my 1-liter bottle.

Divide that by one billion (10^9) to obtain how many parts there are in my water that are drugs: 1.676 x 10^16. That means that if you have one part drug molecule per one billion parts water molecule in your liter of water, you have almost 17 quadrillion drug molecules in your water.

Or, divide by one trillion (10^12) to obtain how many parts are drugs if we're going with parts per trillion: 1.676 x 10^13. That means that if you have one part drug molecule per one trillion parts water molecule in your liter of water, you have almost 17 trillion drug molecules in your water.

That's a lot of drug particles in one liter of water. It is important to consider that my figures do not take into account the mass of the original bottle of water that is due to the drugs molecules themselves, which are pretty hefty in size compared to H2O.

This is what I do to prevent myself from having to write a paper.
