NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares of Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N) tumbled more than 15 percent in early Wednesday trade after the largest U.S. refiner warned it would post a loss in the second quarter.
Weak U.S. demand for gasoline because of the recession has sent Valero's share price down to five-year lows in recent months, and the company has scaled back planned upgrades to its plants.
Valero has focused on turning lower grade crude oil into products such as gasoline and diesel fuel, but the cost advantage of using those crudes has nearly disappeared this year.
Shares of Valero were down 15.5 percent at $18.92 in early trade on the New York Stock Exchange.
