There are these places called "drag strips" and they're placed in quite a few locations around the state. On Fridays, they usually hold what they call a "test & tune" where you can fiddle with your car and then run it in a controlled enviroment. They even time your run for you! It's usually like $10-$15 and not illegal. Try it sometime.
