Gwinnett County police remain locked in an armed standoff with a man who 13 hours earlier allegedly shot two officers as they attempted to serve a warrant at a house in Suwanee.

At 10 a.m. Friday, Gwinnett Police Cpl. Illana Spellman identified the man as William Shable Caram. He is believed to be in his 40s, Spellman said, and has been in contact with police recently.

The scene outside the home at White Cedar Terrace is a chaotic one.

Earlier, a Georgia State Patrol armored vehicle with a battering ram on the front of it arrived, along with several other vehicles. Classes were called off at Riverside Elementary School, which is about a mile away. Traffic was a mess as a stretch of Suwanee Dam Road near Johnson Road was closed.

Tom and Nancy Martin live at the other end of the street from the gunman. They were trying to leave their home Friday morning to attend the funeral of Tom Martin's sister. Police would not let them drive out of the neighborhood, but Nancy Martin said officers escorted them on foot through woods at the back of the neighborhood to a nearby road, where a friend picked them up and was taking them to rent a car for the drive to Warner Robins.

Nancy Martin said she did not know the alleged gunman, who lived about six houses from her house. She said she did not hear the initial gunfire Thursday night but heard a loud noise Friday morning that she believed was police knocking down the front door of the alleged gunman's house.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday when the officers knocked on the door of the home on White Cedar Terrace and were hit by gunfire, according to police spokesman David Schiralli. It was not known how many times they were shot.

The officers were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where they were in stable condition, officials said.

One of the officers underwent surgery and was in the hospital's intensive care unit, Schiralli said at 4:15 a.m. Friday.

The names of the officers have not been released.

A SWAT team was dispatched to the house and at 9 p.m. began negotiating with a man who was holed up inside the residence, Schiralli said. No one else was in the home, off Suwanee Dam Road on the east side of the city.

Gunfire was reported at the home shortly before 6 a.m. Friday, but police have not commented on who fired the shots.
