Those war ships and subs were at war games...full on friendly war only no live war loads all done in a laser tag fashion, but everything else functions as it would in a real war. Since the Chinese had the upper hand and breached undetected they sure could have blown U.S ships if they wanted too, but like you said....that is considered a full on war.
