I don't really agree. I hate some people, but not because they remind me of myself or that they share common traits with me.

I , personally, believe the quote expresses the opinion that what we wind up hating is actually things that we ourselves do but don't realize it. Therefore, we only wind up hating ourselves. The wording just throws it off.
