in the formatting text options, there should be a superscript thing you have to check.

-edit- select the text you want "raised" and right click > font > check the superscript box

    tadaa

Also, if you gotta do a lot of writing with superscripts and subscripts, you can add those functions to the toolbar by going to tools > customize. Then you click on the tab that says "commands." On the left side of the window should be a box with all of the basic menu titles in it (File, Edit, View, etc.). Click on "Format" and then in the box to the right, the formatting options should appear. All you have to do is scroll down to the superscript button, and drag n' drop it on your toolbar wherever you want it.

If you do all of that^ (which is really, really easy), you can save a lot of time with papers that have lots of super/subscripts.

If you're having to write a lot of equations and need to use mathematical operators, you can also use MS's built in equation "plug in".

In the 2003 edition, go to Insert and then Objects and it should come up with a sub menu, pick MS Equation 3.0.

In the 2007 edition, click on the Insert tab and there should be a big equation button on the upper right.
